The central question here isn’t really “which is better” — it’s whether you want a tool shaped around financial tracking and landlord banking, or one built around the full tenant lifecycle from advertising to repair coordination. Both cover rent collection and tenant screening, but they arrive at similar ground from very different directions. Here’s how they actually compare.

The Core Difference

Stessa leads with income/expense tracking, real-time dashboards, a Tax Center, and Landlord Banking — positioning itself squarely around property financial performance. Hemlane leads with rental advertising, applicant tracking, lease management, and 24/7 repair coordination — positioning itself around the operational workflow of managing tenants and properties. Where Stessa emphasizes “manage smarter and faster” through financial visibility, Hemlane emphasizes automating the landlord-to-tenant relationship from listing to renewal.

Pricing

Both tools publish transparent pricing, which is refreshing — no sales call required for either.

Stessa Hemlane
Free tier Essentials (pricing not published) $0/month (free plan)
Entry paid tier $12/month (billed annually) or $15/month (billed monthly) $2/unit/month (billed monthly); $30/month minimum incl. $28 platform fee
Mid tier $28/month (billed annually) or $35/month (billed monthly) $20/unit/month (billed monthly); $48/month minimum incl. $28 platform fee
Upper tier — $58/unit/month (billed monthly); $86/month minimum incl. $28 platform fee
Billing model Flat monthly or annual Per unit + platform fee, with monthly minimums

A few things worth noting:

Stessa uses flat-rate pricing — you pay the same whether you have one property or many, which can make it cost-effective as your portfolio grows. The Essentials plan exists but its price isn’t published, so you’d need to contact them directly on that tier. The Manage and Pro plans are fully transparent.

Hemlane uses a per-unit model on top of a $28/month platform fee. Hemlane’s site mentions a free plan ($0/month) and a 14-day trial on paid plans. The monthly minimums — $30, $48, and $86 — reflect that $28 platform fee bundled in. For a small portfolio, the per-unit pricing is worth calculating against Stessa’s flat rate.

Features, Theme by Theme

Rent Collection & Financial Tracking

Both tools offer rent collection and financial features. Stessa’s positioning leans heavily into this area — its captured features include a Tax Center, Landlord Banking, real-time dashboards and reports, and income/expense tracking. Hemlane captures “Online Rent & Financials” as a feature category, but doesn’t elaborate on the depth of financial reporting or tax tooling in the captured data.

If financial performance visibility and tax-time simplification are priorities, Stessa’s feature set is explicitly built around them.

Tenant Screening

Both tools list Tenant Screening as a feature. Neither fact sheet goes into granular detail about what screening includes, so this is a wash based on available data.

Maintenance

Stessa captures “built-in maintenance tracking.” Hemlane captures “Maintenance & Repairs” and specifically calls out “24/7 repair coordination” in its positioning. These are described differently — Stessa frames it as tracking; Hemlane frames it as active coordination around the clock. The data doesn’t let us verify exactly what each covers operationally, but the framing differs enough to note.

Lease & Tenant Lifecycle

Hemlane has explicit captured features for the full tenant journey: Rental Advertising, Applicant Tracking, Lease Management (described as “from signing to renewals”), and Maintenance & Repairs — plus separate positioning for Rental Owners, Property Managers, Real Estate Agents, and Tenants. Stessa’s captured features include lease drafting in its positioning and a resident-facing portal (pay rent, complete screening, find a home, get renters insurance), but the depth of lease lifecycle management isn’t spelled out in the same way.

Landlord-Specific Extras

Stessa includes Landlord Banking, Landlord Insurance, and Preferred Services in its feature list — none of which appear in Hemlane’s captured data. These are worth weighing if banking or insurance access through your property management platform matters to you.

Mobile App

Stessa mentions a mobile app download in its captured content. Hemlane’s captured data doesn’t surface this.

Who Each Tool Serves

Hemlane explicitly positions itself for multiple roles: Rental Owners, Property Managers, Real Estate Agents, and Tenants — and calls itself “built for every type of long-term rental property.” Stessa’s positioning centers on landlords tracking portfolio performance, with a resident-facing portal for tenants to pay rent, complete screening, and find a home.

What Users Have Said

Some Stessa users report friction around customer support, price/value, ease of use, and invoicing and payments — worth keeping in mind as you evaluate fit.

For Hemlane, we don’t have meaningful third-party review data to draw on — only four reviews were sampled, which isn’t enough to surface reliable patterns either way. A demo or trial period would be the most useful signal there.
